MARTA Ridership Highest But Shortfalls Exist

Recent headlines say MARTA's ridership spiked big time during the gas crunch and the Atlanta area's public transportation system posted one of the biggest increases nationwide at 8.6 percent last year, behind only San Juan, Puerto Rico and Lindenwold, N.J.

MARTA is also reaping financial rewards from federal economic stimulus package. The transportation system will take a $65 million cut from t he stimulus package for repairs, renovation and equipment replacement. Despite all the great news for MARTA, it's facing a budget shortfall of between $65 million to $67 million because sales tax revenues plummeted and its take fell with it.

It almost makes me wish for higher gas prices again so people would just get out of their cars.
